title: Opening Sources alongside a lesson
description: Keep references beside a lesson, or open a book without leaving it.

# Look a little longer

A photograph gives you everything at once. Looking carefully means choosing
where to spend your attention.

Start with [light and shadow](./source-opening/light.page.md), then consider
[composition](./source-opening/composition.page.md). **Shift-click either link**
to keep it beside this lesson. You can open both and write in their note fields.

On a touch screen, use these links:

[@link(open=reference).button Keep light and shadow handy](./source-opening/light.page.md)

[@link(open=reference).button.outline Keep composition handy](./source-opening/composition.page.md)

---

## Keep your place

Once a reference is open, [jump to its second exercise](./source-opening/light.page.md#second-look)
with Shift-click. It reuses the same reference and keeps your notes.

[Continue to the next lesson](./source-opening/next.page.md). Your references stay
open while you move between these lessons. A normal link inside a reference
navigates the main page, too.

---

## Open a book

*Looking Slowly* is a small example book about noticing everyday details.

[@link(open=overlay).button Open Looking Slowly](./source-opening/book.book.md)

Close the overlay to return here. Shift-click the same link to put the book
among your references instead.

[Read the Source opening guide](../docs/authoring/source-opening.guide.md).
